Goals are one of the most important features of Analytics, they allow us to keep track of the most desired actions by our visitors, helping us shape the future of the website.
The Analytics part of Piwik PRO Marketing Suite comes equipped with a quite extensive Goal tracking capabilities. You can learn about them here: Creating and Managing Goals.
But there are situations which we would like to treat as goals but they cannot be tracked using standard tracking methods. That’s when Piwik PRO Tag Manager comes to help!
First, you’ll need to create a new Goal as described in the article above and choose it to be triggered manually
Save your goal and take note of the goal ID from the goal management table.
Proceed to the Tag Manager section of your Piwik PRO Marketing Suite.
Here, create a new tag using the Piwik PRO Goal Conversion tag template.
Now you need to enter the goal ID of your goal, and revenue that your goal grants (revenue is optional):
If needed, both goal ID and revenue can be added dynamically using Tag Managers Variables Function (read more here: Variables Overview).
Additionally, you can track a previously created Piwik PRO Custom Dimension by picking the index number of the dimension and providing its value. Find more about Custom Dimensions here. Advanced tag settings
Tag Type – These settings are available for all the tags in Piwik PRO Tag Manager. They apply when the GDPR Compliance setting is turned on for a given website. Take a look how to turn it on here.
After turning it on, you need to pick the tag type. It can be either Does Not Require Consent, Analytics, A/B Testing and Personalization, Conversion Tracking, Marketing Automation, Remarketing, User Feedback or Custom Consent type.
Every tag type except the “Does not require consent” will require Visitor consent to fire.
Respect visitor privacy – by default, this option is marked in order to respect your visitors’ privacy preferences either expressed by selecting the “Do not track” option in their web browser and/or explicitly opting-out from being tracked. You may change it according to your preferences.
Do not fire in the Debug Mode – once this is ticked, the tag will not be fired in the debug mode. Why tick this? Sometimes you may have tags that are connected with some display CPC campaigns and you simply do not want to waste money when you’re doing some testing.
This option is available for all the tags in Piwik PRO Tag Manager. You can schedule when your tag will go live. By default, it runs forever and all day, but you can change it according to your preferences.
Finally, you should attach a trigger to your new tag, it’s up to you to choose what exactly will trigger this goal. By standard, you can use the Click trigger that is firing whenever a particular click ID is clicked but feel free to experiment with other triggers as well. Learn more about the triggers here.
After you have your tag properly configured, make sure to save it and then just hit the publish button in order to make it live.
