Why do visitor IP addresses end with zeros?

The visitor IP address ends with zeros because it was masked after you turned on IP masking.

Let’s look at a few examples:

  • Full IP address:
  • 1 byte masked:
  • 2 bytes masked:
  • 3 bytes masked:

Note: Also, when you use Consent Manager and turn on Anonymous data tracking, you will see a fully masked IP address in reports:

To change the way you anonymize the visitor’s IP address, follow these steps:

For versions above 13.0.0

  1. Go to Menu > Administration.
  2. Navigate to Platform
  3. On the left, click Privacy settings.
  4. Toggle Mask IP address.
  5. Mask IP address in Piwik PRO.
  6. Select the type of IP masking:
  • 1 byte masked:
  • 2 bytes masked:
  • 3 bytes masked:

For versions below 13.0.0

  1. Go to Menu > Analytics settings.
  2. From the left-hand list, select Privacy.
  3. Choose an option for making users anonymous, and click Save.
