Why do visitor IP addresses end with zeros?

Administration

The visitor IP address ends with zeros because it is masked. IP masking happens when any of these options is turned on:

  • Administration > Sites & apps > Privacy > IP masking > Mask IP addresses (on)
  • Administration > Settings > Privacy > IP masking > Mask IP addresses (on)
  • Administration > Sites & apps > Privacy > Ask visitors for consent (on) > When visitors don’t consent > Collect data using a 30-minute cookie (on)
  • Administration > Sites & apps > Privacy > Ask visitors for consent (on) > When visitors don’t consent > Collect data without using cookies (on)

Here are the levels at which an address can be masked. You’ll see 000 instead of xxx in reports.

  • Full IP address: 192.168.111.255 or 1050:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000
  • Level 1 masked: 192.168.100.xxx or 1050:0000:0000:0000:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx
  • Level 2 masked: 192.168.xxx.xxx or 1050:0000:0000:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx
  • Level 3 masked: 192.xxx.xxx.xxx or 1050:0000:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx
  • Level 4 masked: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx or 1050:00xx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx
  • Fully masked: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx or :: (short version for 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000)
