Tag Manager Overview

A tag is a JavaScript code snippet that sends information to a 3rd party. It is usually placed in the <body> section of a page. Among the most common examples of tags, we can find Piwik PRO Analytics tag, Google AdWords, Facebook pixel, remarketing or affiliates tags.

Tag Manager is an application that enables marketing teams to work in the more agile way, without running every single change through IT department. Tag Manager saves time and time is money.

How you can use it

As an example, we can take a look at Piwik PRO homepage. By using Preview and Debug mode, we can identify some common retargeting tags that are being fired during users’ visit:

  • Adroll
  • FB Tracking Pixel
  • Google AdWords Remarketing
  • Linkedin Ads

Without Tag Manager, if someone in a marketing department decides that tag needs to be added to the website, the process usually is long, chaotic and frustrating (with lots of emails sent and meetings organized). It’s the opposite of agile.

Tag Manager makes it possible for marketers to take full control over their own tool on a web page. Tags are grouped into containers that can be easily managed through the user interface.

If the marketing team wants to check out a new remarketing service, they can copy the required snippet and paste it into the tag manager, decide on preferred conditions for when it gets fired (triggers), and publish live to the website – quick and easy – with no help from IT required.

Can I use Tag Manager with other tools

Yes, Piwik PRO Tag Manager, except the series of its own asynchronous tags templates (Custom Event, Virtual Page View, Audience Manager, Goal Conversion and Custom Dimensions), can be integrated with multiple external tools.

These could be e.g. Google Analytics Tracking, Google Adwords Tracking Conversion, Google Ads Remarketing, DoubleClick Conversion Tag, Facebook Pixel, SalesMANAGO Tracking, Clicktale Tracking Code, Qualaroo Javascript, Marketo Munchkin Javascript, Crazy Egg Tracking Script, HubSpot Tracking Code, Mautic Tracking Code, Salesforce & Pardot Tracking Code, LinkedIn Insight Tag, Universal Event Tracking Tag, HotJar Tracking Code and AdRoll Pixel.

It can also be integrated with series of synchronous tags: VWO Tracking Code, Optimizely Snippet, and A/B Tasty Tag.

Except for all the integration above you can choose Custom HTML Tag (either asynchronous or synchronous).
