Glossary of Tag Manager

Please note that the terms are listed in alphabetical order.

Asynchronous snippet – A snippet that loads at the same time as the page’s content.

Audience – An audience segment is basically a group of persons (site visitors, app users, etc.) who have been identified (anonymously) as sharing a range of attributes (demographic, technological, behavioral and more).

Changelog – Changelog enables you to save different combinations of tag, trigger and variable setups (Snapshots) for any given website. Each snapshot can be published multiple times, which means that you can publish an old snapshot to make it live. In addition to that, you can revert to any snapshot of his choice – as a result, draft based on that snapshot will be created.

Custom variable – Predefined variables, which are the set of the most often used pieces of website information (e.g. domain, specific page element ID, social media account id etc.). The Custom Variables feature is a solution that helps define a set of rules based on your website’s configuration.

Debug Mode – You can preview and debug tag(s) before publishing them. Opening a website in debug mode causes loading your tags setup from the current snapshot even if it wasn’t published before.

Draft – Every new change (tag added, trigger created, variable edited etc) will be displayed as a ‘Draft’ and it won’t be published until you click on the ‘Publish’ button. If you make any changes on the Website again after publishing it, the status will change to “Draft” again.

Flight dates – Scheduled dates. You can set up the dates when your tags will be live.

Snapshot – Snapshots are different combinations of tags, triggers and variables setups for any given website saved in the Changelog.

Snippet – Snippet is a programming term for a small region of re-usable source code.

Synchronous snippet – A snippet that fires and loads first – even before the page loads.

Tag – Tag is a snippet of JavaScript code that sends information to a third party.

Trigger – A trigger specifies how and when a tag should fire.

Variable – Variable is a name-value pair. The value of a variable is determined at run-time. Variables can be used to create triggers conditions, you can use them in custom HTML tag snippets or in some tag templates forms in such fields as IDs, values, and others
