Segments in Custom Reports

With the launch of Analytics (new), we started using segments that are defined separately to segments in the current Analytics. So if you want to use segments in Custom Reports and are not using Analytics (new), you need to create them.

Before you start

Here are some things to know about segments before you begin creating them:

  • You can create as many segments as you want to.
  • You can join conditions using And and Or logic operators.
  • You can create a segment that will be visible only for you or for all users. 
  • You can use a segment on all your websites if it’s set as a global segment.
  • The segment will work for historical data.

Create a new segment

To build a new segment, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Menu > Analytics (New).
  2. At the top of any open tab like Dashboards, Reports, Custom Reports, Goals, or Ecommerce you will find segments. Click the + button.
  3. Click Manage segments.
  4. Click Add new segment.
  5. Name the segment.
  6. Choose the Visibility option: segment author or all users.
  7. If you want to have this segment available on all websites, mark the Global segment.
  8. On the right, pick the dimension that you want to use and drag it to the drop section.
  9. Set the condition. For example, Page URL contains
  10. If you want to, drag and drop more dimensions and set conditions. Drop the dimension in the field with the right And or Or logic operator.
  11. When done, click Create segment.

Use segments in Custom Reports

When you have segments ready, you can apply them to your custom reports.

To use a segment in a custom report, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Menu > Analytics (New).
  2. Navigate to Custom Reports.
  3. Pick the report you want to view.
  4. On top, click All visitors.
  5. Pick the segment that you want to use and view the report.

Now, if you want to compare two segments in a custom report, follow these steps:

  1. Apply the first segment as described in the previous section.
  2. Click + button.
  3. Pick the segment that you want to compare with the first one and view the report.
