Goals help you focus on events important for you site or app. You can use them to see when users sign up, buy your product, download a white paper or do anything else that you find essential for your business.

In this article, we’ll show you how to create a goal and start measuring conversions.

Create a goal

To create a goal, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Menu > Analytics.
  2. Navigate to Goals.
  3. On the left, click Add a goal.
  4. Name the goal.
  5. Mark Track the goal automatically.

    Tip: You can also track a goal manually.

  6. In Goal settings > Event type, pick the event type. For example, Visit page with URL
  7. In Goal settings > Condition, set one of the conditions:
    • URL contains _____________ . Example: URL contains success.
    • URL is exactly _____________. Example: URL is exactly https://clearbank/success/.
    • URL matches the expression (regex) __________. Example: URL matches the expression /product/[0-9]+/add-wishlist/ (That could be set if you want to catch two URLs like these: and
  8. Optionally, in Advanced settings, you can set the following:
    • Allow multiple goals per session: Every time a visitor reaches this goal during a session, it will be tracked again.
    • Assign revenue to goal conversion ($): A monetary value set for goal conversion. For example, a submitted contact form may be worth $10. (The currency is the one you’ve set for your site or app in Administration > Sites & apps > Data collection > Basic info > Currency.)

    Note: If you want to assign goal revenue dynamically, you need to track a goal manually and set a variable that will hold the revenue value.

  9. When you’re done, click Save

Once the goal is ready, Piwik PRO will start collecting information about goal conversions and will count the goal conversion rate. Additionally, if you’ve set a monetary value for a goal, Piwik PRO will record the value when a goal is completed and count the total value.

View the goal report

When you are done with setting goals for your website and waited a bit to collect visitors data, you can start looking at the goal report.

To access the goal report, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Menu > Analytics.
  2. Navigate to Goals.
  3. On the left, pick the name of the goal you want to work with.
  4. Navigate to Overview.
  5. Navigate to Session log.
  6. Navigate to User flow.

    Note: In meta sites/apps, you can map goals and see combined data in Analytics > Goals.

The goal report is not the only report with data about goals. Goal conversions, goal conversion rate, and goal revenue will appear in most of the core reports in Analytics. For example, in the engagement report under Menu > Analytics > Reports > Engagement.

Goal examples

As we’ve already mentioned, goals can take different shapes. To give you some inspiration for defining goals, we’ll list a few of them as examples:

  • Visit a contact page: the goal is achieved when a visitor visits the page with contact information.
  • Sends a contact form: the goal is achieved when a visitor submits a contact form.
  • Newsletter signup: the goal is achieved when a visitor signs up for a newsletter.
  • Buys a product: the goal is achieved when a visitor makes a purchase.
  • App signup: the goal is achieved when a visitor signs up to use our app.
  • Ebook download: the goal is achieved when a visitor downloads an ebook. (Keep in mind that we can only track the visitor clicking the download button, but we don’t know if the visitor downloaded the file completely.)
  • Play a video: the goal is achieved when a visitor starts watching a video.
