Download report

Analytics new

The download report shows links that visitors click to download files on your website. Download data helps you learn which files people pick from your site — be it a white paper, a case study, or a guide in pdf.

Piwik PRO tracks over seventy popular file formats. You’ll find a full list of them at the end of this article.

To view the report, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Menu > Analytics (new).
  2. Navigate to Reports.
  3. On the left, click Downloads.
  4. View the report.

Metrics in the report

In the download report, you’ll find the following metrics:

  • Unique downloads: The number of unique clicks on links to downloadable files. When a visitor clicks the same link many times during a session, it will be counted only once.
  • Downloads: The number of clicks on links to downloadable files.

You can apply segments to this report, export this report to a CSV, XML, JSON, or JSON (KV) file format, or customize the report.

If you have a file that is not supported by Piwik PRO or you don’t want to track a specific format, you can add or remove such a format manually. Here’s how.

Add the following code to the Piwik PRO tracking code above the line with trackPageView:

  • _paq.push([‘setDownloadExtensions’, “specify|me”]);: Use this code to limit file formats tracked as downloads. Add a file extension to “specify|me”, for example “doc|docx|pdf”. Piwik PRO will then track only file formats added to this field.
  • _paq.push([‘addDownloadExtensions’, “specify|me”]);: Use this code to add a new file format to be tracked as a download. Add a file extension to  “specify|me”, for example “pages”. Piwik PRO will then track added file format along with default formats.
