Referrers Reports – Introduction

January 23, 2018

Why Care about Referrers?

One of the first steps in becoming a successful web analytic specialist is recognizing which sources of traffic are important and which ones you should invest in. Without knowing your traffic sources, you are constantly losing valuable information and basically losing money.

Think about it. First of all, there can be so many sources of traffic, and you have to stay on top of all of them. And what about all those mentions of your domain all over the web? There are so many possibilities lurking about, hidden in the information about the sources of your traffic!

That’s why Piwik PRO provides you with a comprehensive report on all sources of your traffic grouped together in the referrers reports.

What is a referrer in Piwik PRO?

Generally speaking, referrers are all the different places from where a visitor came to a particular site. Therefore referrers reports present the data on the different sources of your traffic.

It’s good to add here, that there can be different types of referrers, depending on the way you define them. And Piwik PRO distinguishes between four types:

  • Direct entry when a visitor visits your website by entering the correct URL directly into the browser;
  • Websites when a visitor clicks on a link while visiting another website, which redirects him to your site;
  • Campaigns when a visitor came to your website as the result of a particular campaign (your campaign, of course).
  • Search Engines when a visitor finds your website using a search engine;
  • Those four types of referrers are important to understand, as they become the base for organizing Referrers reports in Piwik PRO. And, as you’ll see below, there is a lot of information to be derived from those four types of referrers. You’ll find them in Piwik PRO grouped into six different subcategories of reports.
